Dairy, Hydrogenated Oils and Sugar can Cause Acne
We now have over 17 million people in the US that have acne, costing our health care system an estimated one billion dollars a year. Eighty to ninety percent of teenagers suffer from acne to varying degrees at one time or another. Teenagers and adults alike are trying many of the remedies advertised on TV and in magazines and a very many are using prescription drugs.
Many dermatologists prescribe long-term antibiotics and Accutane, both of which may cause long-term harmful effects.
Let’s take a look at possible causes of the problem and possible natural support to help the body heal from the inside out. Dr. Mark Hyman relates in his works that in 2009, a systematic review of 21 observational studies and six clinical trials found a high correlation between cow’s milk and both increased numbers of people who got acne and its severity. He also found that people who had higher sugar intake and a high glycemic load diet (more bread, rice, cereal, pasta, sugar, and flour products of all kinds) had significantly more acne.

Our typical diet is full of inflammatory fats, such as the saturated fats, trans fats, too many omega-6, and inflammatory processed vegetable oils like soy and corn oils. These increase the hormones and stimulate pimple follicles. Inflammation has been linked to acne, and anti-inflammatory Omega 3’s like the fish and flax oil may help improve acne and help with many skin disorders. Supplements for inflammation can be a great help in reducing the inflammatory pathways.
Dairy, hydrogenated oils and refined sugar cause blood sugar to raise and to become dys-regulated. Androgens and insulin both stimulate skin to form pimples. Toxins and nutritional deficiencies can precipitate or complicate the problem as well.
Detoxification can aid in clearing a bad complexion. The skin is your first line of defense from foreign invasion. The skin is also a giant filter to release poisons and toxins if your other systems like the kidneys, liver and lymphatics are overloaded. Your skin is the largest organ in the body. Let’s take care of it!
